SC378 - Calcite

Locality: Peregrina Mine, Guanajuato, Guanajuato Municipality, Guanajuato, Mexico (MINDAT)
Size: 5 x 4 x 3 cm - Miniature (3-6 cm)
Weight: 63.9 g
minID: KNR-VMQ

Two partial, but large, scalenohedral calcite crystals, with a slight pink color. Under shortwave UV light they fluoresce orange/red, typical for manganese (Mn2+) activation. Under longwave UV light the fluorescence is a little weaker, but more subtle: the tip of the crystals are again red/orange, but a white fluorescence seems to come out from the center, deep under the surface. It could be due a first generation fluorescent white, being overgrown by a new generation, richer in manganese fluorescing red.
